Spartan Elite License: Program Overview

What is the Spartan Elite License?

The Spartan Elite License is a program designed to identify and support top athletes in the sport, creating a clear pathway from Age Group racing to Elite competition while ensuring the highest level of competition. Starting in 2027, athletes will need an Elite License to compete in Elite heats at Regional and World Championship events.

When does the Elite License start?

The program officially launches for the 2027 season. Athletes will qualify for their 2027 Elite License based on their race performances during the 2026 season.

Which races require an Elite License?

Starting in 2027, an Elite License is strictly required to access Elite heats at:

Regional Championships
World Championships

Regular Spartan races, National & Regional Series races, and National Championships will still allow Elite registrations without an Elite License.

Qualification Criteria

Who is eligible and how do I apply?

There is no direct application process. All athletes aged 18 and older automatically become eligible based on their race results during the qualification period.

How do athletes qualify?

Athletes qualify by achieving specific placement standards during the season. The criteria vary slightly depending on whether the athlete is currently racing Elite or Age Group.

Note on Age Group Rankings: All age categories are combined into a single overall ranking for qualification purposes. This pathway provides top-performing Age Group athletes the opportunity to progress into Elite racing.

Is there a roll-down system?

No. Qualification is based strictly on performance standards, not on available slots or roll-down positions.

Will there be wild cards?

Yes, but only in exceptional circumstances and entirely at the discretion of the Spartan Sport Committee.

Do Para athletes need an Elite License?

Not at this time. Para athletes are welcome to compete without an Elite License. The current program does not apply to Para athlete categories. Any future updates will be communicated in advance.

License Rules, Terms, and Lifecycle

If I qualify, can I immediately race Elite Championship heats?

No. Qualification works for the following season only.

Example: If you qualify during the 2027 season, your Elite License will be valid for the 2028 season.

What happens if I decline the Elite License?

If you decline the license, you will not be allowed to race Elite heats at Regional or World Championships. However, you may still compete in:

Elite heats at regular races, National/Regional Series, and National Championships.
Age Group categories.

Can Elite License athletes race in Age Group?

No. Athletes who accept the Elite License must race in the Elite category at Championship events whenever an Elite heat is offered.

Penalty: Competing in Age Group at an event with an Elite License will result in the immediate cancellation of the Elite License.
Exception: Athletes may still race in Open heats for fun!

What happens if I no longer meet the qualification standards?

If an Elite athlete does not meet the qualification criteria during a season, they will lose their Elite License eligibility for the following season and must compete in Age Group categories. They can re-earn the license by meeting the standards again.

Example: An athlete holds an Elite License in 2027. If they fail to meet the qualification criteria during the 2027 season, they lose their license for 2028 and must race Age Group. If they achieve the necessary results during the 2028 season, they regain their Elite License for 2029.

How will I know if I qualified?

Qualified athletes will receive an official email containing:

Qualification confirmation
Elite License benefits
Instructions to access gated Elite heats
Elite License Terms & Conditions (more info coming soon)

How will registration work?

Elite Championship heats will strictly be accessible to qualified Elite License athletes. Eligible athletes will receive access automatically through their Spartan account or via an invitation/access code where required.

What information is required on my Spartan account?

To activate your Elite License, your Spartan account must include:

Full name
Date of birth
Profile photo
Email address
Nationality selection
(Note: Nationality selection is valid for the full season and must match your passport)

What are the benefits of the Elite License?

Athletes holding an Elite License may receive:

Access to Championship Elite heats
Eligibility for prize money
Dedicated Elite athlete communication
Travel and accommodation support (when applicable)
Dedicated athlete services at events
Media and PR opportunities
Potential selection to the National Team Program

What are the obligations of Elite License athletes?

Elite athletes are expected to:

Submit their tentative race calendar in January
Confirm event attendance 8 weeks prior
Respect travel and accommodation deadlines
Participate in event media obligations when required
Strictly follow Spartan rules and regulations
Support event promotion on social media
